Siamak Malek, MD

Biography: 


Siamak Malek, MD, clinical instructor of medicine, was recruited as a clinician- educator. Dr. Malek received his MD from Stony Brook University School of Medicine in 2005 and completed his internal medicine residency at UPMC in 2008. He worked a year for Doctors without Borders in Malawi, Africa, before returning to Pittsburgh. Dr. Malek is an attending doctor of internal medicine at UPMC.


Presentation:

Dr. Malek just returned from a nine month mission in Malawi with Doctors Without Borders. Using case examples from Malawi, Dr. Malek will illustrate how globalization impacts the health of his patients in Malawi. He will focus on the spread and treatment of HIV and the impact of intellectual property rights, trade policies, and economic policies of International Financial Institutions. He will also discuss the shortfalls of humanitarian aid  and how NGO's can actually exacerbate the problems.
