2011 North East Regional Workshop


2011 Poster Competition Guidelines

 

Overview: The EWB-USA North East Region Workshop Committee is inviting regional chapters to submit project posters that showcase their best projects. The poster should clearly identify the project taken on by the chapter and any progress made thus far, providing graphs, charts, and/or pictures to aid as reference.

 

Submission:

 

Each submitting chapter must:


1.   Print its own poster and bring the poster to the Workshop.

a.    Poster must be submitted to Emma Yee on November 18th by 5:00 pm

b.   Prepare poster boards to be mounted on easels, which will be provided.


2.   For each poster, submit the chapter name, project participants, project title, and a short overview of the project electronically via email to Emma Yee, ehy2102@columbia.edu by 11:59 PM Friday, EXTENDED TO NOVEMBER 11th.


3.   By November 13th, a pdf of the poster must be submitted to ehy2102@columbia.edu.

 

Eligibility:

                            Any Professional or Student Chapter belonging to the EWB-USA North East Region is eligible to submit ONE poster per

                            international project.  Chapters  that have multiple international projects can submit up to three posters: (1) which focuses on

                            the chapter, (1) for project A, and (1) for project B.

 

Poster Board Size:

o   24” x 36” (±¼”)

 

Poster Board Orientation:

o   The poster boards may be oriented either vertically (i.e., portrait format) or horizontally (i.e., landscape format).

 

Poster Margins:

o   1-inch-wide margin (± ¼”) is required around the full perimeter of the poster board. This margin must remain empty (i.e., free of all text and/or photos).

 

Project Title:

o   The poster board must include a title box at the top center of the poster with a title, the name of the chapter and project location.


o   The title box should be oriented horizontally and have dimensions of 22” x 2” ( ±¼”). The title font should be of size that fills the height or the width of the title box.


Project Data Box:

o   A project data box should be placed in the upper left corner of each poster board with dimensions of 8” x 10” ( ±¼”). The project data box should be oriented the same as the poster board (i.e. portrait format on a vertically oriented poster board or landscape format on a horizontally oriented poster board).


o   The project data box should include, at minimum, the following information in the order shown:

1.    Chapter Name

2.    Project Name

3.    Name of the town/village and country in which the project is/was constructed

          (example: New York, United States)

4.    Project Dates (example: March 2010-June 2011)

5.    Project Members’ Names

6.    Project Phase

7.    Total Cost of Project

8.    Name and Email Address of Project Contact

9.    Name of Professional Partner Group(s) Involved in Project

10.  Name of Partner Organization(s) in Local Community (if any)

11.  Name of Significant Donor(s) or Contributor(s) to the Project


o   The minimum text font is 12.

 

Project Description Box:

o   A project description box provides an opportunity to describe the project, its challenges, how they were overcome, and how the project has (or will) benefit the local community.


o   A project description box should be placed in the lower right corner of each poster board and have dimensions of 8” x 10” (± ¼”). The project data box should be oriented the same as the poster board (i.e., portrait format on a vertically oriented poster board or landscape format on a horizontally oriented poster board). 


o   The minimum text font size is 12.

 

Graphics:

o   The remainder of the poster board is available for displaying project graphics. As many graphics as can be accommodated in the available space are encouraged. Photographs must be high resolution for enlargement purposes and at least 300dpi. The graphics may be arranged in portrait format, landscape format, or a combination of both formats.


o   Descriptive captions must be placed below each graphic. The caption box must have the same horizontal dimension as the graphic above it and a maximum height of 1.5” (± ¼”). There should be a clear distance between the bottom of the graphic and the top of the associated caption box of 0.5” (± ¼” ).


Logos:

o   The EWB-USA North East Region logo must be placed at the top left hand corner of all posters. The chapter logo may be placed at the top right hand corner of the poster and must be in accordance with EWB-USA guidelines.


o   As illustrated in the poster templates, there are additional logo spaces which can be used for sponsors. If more logo space is needed, please add to the bottom of the page in designated area (see poster templates).

 

Judging Procedure:

                            A panel of three judges from the hosting chapters and the North East Region will be responsible for rating the posters based on

                            multiple criteria on a 1-5 scale. The outcome of each vote will be compiled and averaged to produce an overall score.  The judge

                            panel will then deliberate and select winners from the top five scores. Winners will be announced during the Workshop.

 

Judging Criteria:

1.  Appearance- Charts, graphs, and pictures should be included to better explain the project. Size must meet specified requirements :  24” x 36” (± ¼” )


2.  Content- The poster must be factual with concise, significant information pertaining to the project and must be as up to date as possible.


3.  Organization- All ideas and tasks for the project are presented in a logical order without excessive repetitiveness. All information should be clearly legible.


4.  Conventions- No grammatical errors and good sentence structure.


5.  Focus-Poster clearly shows the project problem statement and proposed/implemented solution. Does not stray away from the subject and follows a specific point.

 

Awards:

1.  The first place winner will receive $300 deposited into their chapter’s EWB-USA Project Account.


2.  The second place winner will receive $150 deposited into their chapter’s EWB-USA Project account.


3.  The third place winner will receive $75 deposited into their chapter’s EWB-USA Project account.

 

Please note that poster format guidelines presented above must be met.

Posters that do not meet the specified guidelines may not be displayed.
